About Us

Open Ascents are mountaineering professional organisation based in the English Lake District. Specialising in delivering climbing, mountaineering and safety service. Open Ascents pride themselves on creating learning environments to provide their clients with skills and experiences for life. A collection of outdoor professionals all specialising in their own field. With years worth of experience all our guides and instructors are fully qualified for the activities they perform in, insured for your peace of mind and highly first aid qualified. ​

Open Ascents activities are run & facilitated by John Brooks, who has climbed and worked all over the world from Nepal to the European Alps, John has over a decade experience in the Outdoor industry, a member of The Association of Mountaineering instructors (AMI) the highest level of instructors in Britain and is a full-time member of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team. ​

John specialises in summer rock climbing and mountaineering as well as the winter environment and avalanche awareness and rescue.

Our company aims are to provide first class profesional mountain based services bespoke to the individual, provide our clients with the skills to be independent in the mountains and provide an open environment for all. We aim to inspire, motivate and encourage independence through real mountain environments.

What is AMI?

The Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) is the representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors in the UK and Ireland. It is the highest body for instructing climbing and mountaineering in the UK.

AMI was formed in 1990 to represent the interests of the highly experienced mountaineers who have undergone rigorous training and assessment to qualify under the Mountain Training UK (MTUK) Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Scheme.
